Do You Need A Window Repair Or A Window Replacement?

It can be intimidating to think about a serious home improvement project, and oftentimes, we put them off until the last minute. Procrastination does not help much because it only makes matters worse. How proactive you are can make the difference between a window repair and a window replacement. With that in mind, here are some things to look for that indicate that you must repair your windows or possibly replace them.

Damaged Window Frames

If you notice that there are nicks or large chips in your window frames, you should probably consider window repair. If the frames are noticeably water damaged, you should probably look at getting a window replacement as repairing them is likely not possible.

Windows are Stuck

Stuck windows are inconvenient and can be a home security issue. Windows that do not open easily will likely not close easily. They may even get stuck. This would obviously make the windows difficult to lock. All of these signs could indicate that the windows were installed improperly. It is probably best to replace them at this point.

Condensation/Moisture

If you notice moisture buildup between the window panes, it is an indication that the seals have likely gone bad. If there are cracks in the windows, moisture can seep in through the cracks, and any gas used to insulate the windows can also escape. Gas can also escape when the seals go bad.

External Noise

If outside noises seem louder, or you cannot seem to filter external noises inside your home, there could be a problem. This could indicate that the seals are improperly installed, or the window was already defective. It is best to replace the window with those that use gas insulation if you live in a noisy neighborhood.

Air Escaping

If you notice that you feel wind drafts in your home while your windows are closed, it is time to get your windows checked. This could indicate that they were not sealed properly, installed properly, or just defective.

In recent years, there has been a lot of improvement in window manufacturing that enhance home security and energy efficiency. The more efficient the windows are, the more you can save on your heating and air conditioning bills. Stronger panes are used now to help with home security, and newer panes can block more harmful UV light.  If you notice any problems with your older windows, now is the time to get them checked to see if you need a window repair or a window replacement.
