Tips For Cleaning Old, Historic Windows Without Damaging Them

If your home has old, historic windows, then you need to take this into account when cleaning them. You don't want to just go at the windows with a harsh window cleaning solution and a scrub brush, as this could damage them. Instead, here are some tips you should follow when cleaning old, historic windows.

Use microfiber cloths.

With older windows, you do not want to use a scrub brush or anything too abrasive. Some older glass was not as hard and scratch-resistant as today's glass, and you risk leaving etched marks on the windows if you use something too abrasive. At the same time, a paper towel or piece of linen won't do a great job of clinging onto smaller pieces of dirt and debris. Microfiber cloths tend to be the best choice for cleaning older windows. They are soft to the touch, and yet they pick up fine debris very well.

Avoid applying too much pressure to the glass.

As you clean the window, be careful not to apply too much pressure. You don't want to accidentally pop a piece of glass out of the frame, which may be partially deteriorated due to age. A common mistake is to apply a lot of pressure in spots where there are bubbles in the glass. But rest assured — those bubbles are a feature of the glass, and there's nothing you can do to get rid of them. There's no need to press on them.

Use a mild, ammonia-free window cleaner.

The standard, blue window cleaner you use on newer windows is not a good choice for older windows. While it won't hurt the glass, it will drip down and get into the frame, and it will help accelerate the deterioration of that frame. Use a mild, natural window cleaner that does not contain ammonia, and use it sparingly. Try not to get too much on the window frame.

Remove caked-on grime with a razor blade.

If you do come across some caked-on grime that you can't rub away gently with a microfiber cloth, then the best way to remove it is with a razor blade. Position the blade at a 45-degree angle with the glass and drag it over the dirty spot. The dirt should come away without you having to apply that much pressure.

With the tips above, you can more safely clean older windows. Reach out to a window cleaning company if you need any assistance.
